Thunder Bay & Lake Huron Coast · Town edition

Alpena

The Shipwreck Capital of America nestled along Thunder Bay, offering deep maritime heritage, ice festivals, and wild elk viewing.

Overheard in Alpena
Alpena is the proud Shipwreck Capital of America, with over 200 preserved wrecks resting in the cold waters of Thunder Bay.
Why winter

Alpena in winter is a vibrant coastal hub that embraces the cold. Famous for Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (preserving dozens of preserved shipwrecks beneath the bay), Alpena hosts the energetic Alpena Ice Festival, cross-country skiing at Rockport State Park, and proximity to Michigan's famous wild elk herds in the nearby Black River country.

A winter tall tale · as told in Alpena

Agnes at the Lau

The 1885 building that held the John A. Lau Saloon has been a funeral parlor, a speakeasy and a restaurant. Its best-known regular is Agnes Lau, wife of the 1892 proprietor, who died young and, the staff insist, came back to keep an eye on the cellar. Flipped trays and missing things have been blamed on her for years, and nobody seems to mind.
