Detroit
Six neighborhoods, excellent food, serious museums, and an ice rink with a skyline attached.
Corktown works well as an evening neighborhood: barbecue at Slows, then a reserved cocktail stop at Sugar House.
Start with art
Pick a few galleries to enjoy slowly.
Add a film
Choose a dated screening as the evening’s anchor.
Get outside your own way
Choose a park outing or an operating rink that fits your group.
Make dinner a chapter
Leave time for a café stop and a meal.

The parade morning
America’s Thanksgiving Parade is scheduled for November 26, 2026, stepping off at 8:45 a.m. along Woodward from Kirby toward Congress. Most route viewing is free; grandstands are ticketed. The organizer’s parking section still contains 2025 information—use fresh city notices for road closures.
Organizer’s visitor guide ↗The downtown winter night
Campus Martius is the skating anchor; Cadillac Square’s markets add a shopping stop. The rink page reviewed still shows 2025–26 hours, so new-season hours and prices are not confirmed here.

Pair a short outdoor visit with the aquarium or conservatory when their individual schedules align. Vehicle entry requires a Recreation Passport. Island conditions and attraction hours are separate checks; stay off natural ice.
Plan Belle Isle ↗Palmer Park: take the woodland version
Historic woods and hiking trails give Detroit a quieter winter outing. Ask People for Palmer Park about current trail access and programs; winter walking does not mean maintained or ice-free paths.
Park visitor information ↗Art / Detroit Institute of Arts
Make the museum part of the day. Trade wind and traffic for galleries, then decide whether you want another outdoor stop or a longer afternoon inside.
Coffee into evening / Café Sous Terre
A Midtown café and cocktail stop gives your day a natural hinge: warm up over coffee, or make it the start of your evening.
Film / Detroit Film Theatre
Build an evening around a scheduled screening at the DIA rather than treating indoors as a fallback. Select a performance date before shaping the rest of the day.
Take the long lunch. Look at the art. Text someone back later.

Saturday: Eastern Market, the DIA, downtown skating, and Cliff Bell's; stay at The Siren or Trumbull & Porter. Sunday: a Belle Isle walk, lunch at Mexican Village, then Corktown and an early barbecue dinner at Slows.
Saturday morning: Anthology Coffee and Eastern Market → afternoon: the DIA → evening: Selden Standard, then a booked jazz set at Cliff Bell's.

Eight-year-old Isaiah has named his favorite Belle Isle sledding hill the tallest mountain in Michigan. His grandmother Lorraine has survived enough Detroit winters to disagree, but she hasn't gone down a sledding hill in years. That might be about to change.
