Brighton

Ski laps, a millpond downtown and a bronze man who has weathered more criticism than the weather.

Why winter

Mt. Brighton puts downhill skiing close to Main Street dinner, while the recreation area's lakes and woods offer a quieter winter day. Downtown is compact enough to combine coffee, public art and a reservation without conducting a transport study.

Overheard in Brighton
The millpond is downtown's common reference point; Main Street dinner plans tend to orbit it.
Or try · 02

Two kinds of vertical ambition

Take a beginner lesson at Mt. Brighton, then compare the hill's scale with Brewery Becker's substantial nineteenth-century Western House. End with a beer or one of the brewery's non-alcoholic options.

A critic's walking lunch

Visit Decision Pending at the millpond, give it a one-sentence review, then compare verdicts over lunch at Bourbons. The sculpture has already survived council debate; it can probably survive yours.

Field note

Brewery Becker occupies the Western House, built in 1873.

A winter tall tale · as told in Brighton

Decision eventually reached

Decision Pending arrived through Brighton's 2006 public-art project and became a permanent city purchase the following year. The bronze man acquired nicknames, admirers, detractors and a habit of being dressed for local occasions. During the 2023 streetscape project he was removed temporarily, prompting another debate over where he belonged. Council voted to return him to Mill Pond Park: the decision pending had finally acquired minutes.

Decision Pending, near Main Street at Mill Pond Park

  1. The clenched fist that makes the figure's pose read as resolve.
  2. The broad, deliberately disproportionate body rather than an idealized classical torso.
  3. The upright, planted stance that keeps the figure looking stubbornly present.

Local custom

Use the formal sculpture title first, then let a local supply the nickname.

Local customs
  • Book ski rentals and lessons before arriving; a short ski hill can still produce a long queue.
  • Keep Sunday dinner plans clear of Brighton Bar & Grill, which closes that day.
  • Brewery Becker occupies the Western House, built in 1873.
  • Decision Pending is the formal title of the bronze man locals often call the Ugly Naked Guy.
  • Public art here has generated actual civic debate, a respectable alternative to discussing parking.
