Keweenaw Peninsula & Copper Country · Town edition

Calumet

A monumental 19th-century copper-mining metropolis preserved in time, featuring grand red-stone architecture and deep snow-swept streets.

Winter in Calumet
Overheard in Calumet
Calumet's grand 19th-century red-stone buildings reflect the staggering wealth of the global copper mining boom that once centered here.
Why winter

Calumet in winter is an open-air historical epic. Once a booming copper capital that nearly hosted the 1904 Olympics, today its towering Italianate red-brick and sandstone commercial blocks stand silent and majestic amidst deep Keweenaw snowdrifts. With the Calumet Theatre hosting winter events and miles of snowmobile and ski trails winding through old mining ruins, it is a fascinating destination.

Madame Modjeska's encore

The Calumet Theatre has anchored Copper Country culture since 1900, and the great Polish Shakespearean actress Helena Modjeska played its stage. Local actors say she never quite left. Visitors report a sudden chill and a woman watching from the balcony, and performers swear that when someone forgets a line, she mouths it for them.
