Michigan Thumb — Huron County, Saginaw Bay · Town edition

Caseville

A summer beach town that spends February racing, eating chili, and jumping into spectacularly cold water.

Overheard in Caseville
Caseville is widely known for its summer Cheeseburger in Caseville festival.
Why winter

Caseville becomes a different place after the beach crowds disappear: quieter streets, expansive Saginaw Bay views, a few dependable restaurants, and a surprisingly spirited winter festival. Shanty Days arrives in February with community contests, chili, music, and a polar plunge. The summer personality may be tropical; the winter edition has considerably more nerve.

A February Festival of Bad Ideas

Attend Shanty Days on February 12–13, 2027. Watch the announced competitions, sample chili if the cook-off returns, and let somebody else volunteer for the polar plunge.

A random Saturday · 01

The Vault and the Brewery

Visit Lemon Tree Marketplace on a scheduled winter weekend, inspect the old bank vault, then walk to Thumb Brewery for a meal. The former bank and modern brewery have quite different approaches to liquid assets.

Field note

Shanty Days gives the community a separate winter identity.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: Browse downtown, visit Lemon Tree and Lefty's, and finish at Thumb Brewery. Sunday: Explore the public shoreline and Sleeper State Park if access permits. For Shanty Days weekend, substitute the confirmed festival schedule when published.

One good day

Start with coffee at Lemon Tree on a winter weekend, explore its historic vault, and walk downtown. Have lunch at Lefty's, photograph the Saginaw Bay shoreline from safe ground, then finish at Thumb Brewery during its published hours.

A winter tall tale · as told in Caseville

The Bank Vault That Started Serving Coffee

Lemon Tree Marketplace occupies the former Hubbard State Bank, constructed in 1904. The bank operated there until the late 1970s, and its original vault remains inside, including the heavy door and thick surrounding walls. Today visitors can buy coffee, browse antiques, and inspect the surviving banking hardware. The money has moved elsewhere, but the vault still has excellent security.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
