Otsego County Uplands · Town edition

Gaylord

An alpine-themed snowbelt plateau city featuring Swiss chalet storefronts, massive winter snowfalls, and world-class cross-country trail networks.

Why winter

Gaylord sits high on the Otsego County plateau, catching deep lake-effect snows from Lake Michigan that turn the town into an authentic Swiss-alpine wonderland. With Treetops Resort nearby, miles of groomed cross-country ski trails at Forbush Corner, and downtown buildings styled with Swiss gables, it is a quintessential northern snow capital.

A winter tall tale · as told in Gaylord

The Christmas tree that keeps growing

In January 1957, Gaylord's maintenance crew started spraying water over discarded Christmas trees outside the county courthouse. The frozen tower drew so much attention that it became a tradition, and the trees were eventually replaced with a steel frame that holds far more ice. After a few weeks of hard cold it towers over everyone. Most towns take their trees down in January. Gaylord keeps watering its.
