Cross-country skiers gliding past a snowy village
Sleeping Bear Dunes & Leelanau Peninsula · Town edition

Glen Arbor

A pine-scented crossroads wedged between frozen Glen Lake and the towering snow bluffs of Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Why winter

In July, Glen Arbor is a gridlock of kayaks and cherry-fudge shoppers. In January, the silence around Glen Lake is almost startled by your crunching boots, Art's Tavern has a barstool with your name on it, and a refurbished 19th-century gristmill pours the best espresso within thirty miles.

Remembering to bring physical twenty-dollar bills to Art's Tavern is a badge of local competence.
A random Saturday

Nothing planned. Here’s the plan.

A random Saturday · 01

Gristmill to Granite Stones

Start at 8 a.m. with a cardamom bun and pour-over at The Mill Glen Arbor, snowshoe three miles up Alligator Hill to see the Manitou Passage, then drive around Glen Lake to Broomstack Kitchen to watch a curling match over Sicilian pizza.

Or try · 02

Ghost Town & Corner Tavern

Rent XC skis at Crystal River Outfitters and glide out the Heritage Trail to the snow-buried 19th-century maritime village of Glen Haven, then thaw out under the college pennants at Art's Tavern with a basket of fried whitefish.

Field note

Every winter conversation begins with the ice thickness on Little Glen vs. Big Glen Lake.

Michigan winter
Make it a weekend

Book a room above the waterwheel at The Mill Glen Arbor, spend Saturday skiing the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail and eating supper downstairs, then hit Art's Tavern for Sunday morning eggs and a drive around the frozen Narrows.

One good day

Morning coffee at The Mill, snowshoe Alligator Hill, lunch and a cherry beer at Cherry Public House, and sunset over the ice at Glen Haven beach.

Eat · good tables

Dinner, the warm part of the day.

A winter tall tale · as told in Glen Arbor

The ghost town just down the road

Glen Haven, a short drive from Glen Arbor, began as a fuelling stop for Great Lakes steamers and grew busy on logging and shipping. Changing routes and the Depression slowly emptied it; the last dune rides ran in 1978. The general store and blacksmith shop still stand inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The town never quite disappeared. It became its own exhibit.
