West Michigan · Town edition

Holland

Dutch holiday rituals, heated sidewalks and a new ice ribbon give this lakeshore town unusually good winter manners.

Overheard in Holland
Kerstmarkt is the Dutch Christmas-market tradition transplanted to Eighth Street.
Why winter

Holland makes winter a downtown season: the Kerstmarkt, illuminated windmill and Holland on Ice now share the calendar with an ice-skating park. The snowmelt system keeps much of the central walking route clearer, while nearby Pigeon Creek supplies the actual snow under your skis.

A random Saturday · 01

A pickle factory in disguise

At Hops, ask about the curved bar's former life around Heinz vinegar tanks, then find the school brass and chicken-brooder lights. Lunch comes with a better salvage tour than most museums permit.

Or try · 02

Snow underfoot, then deliberately absent

Rent skis at Pigeon Creek when conditions allow, then return for a snowmelt-sidewalk walk and hot coffee at Lemonjello's. Compare two very different municipal approaches to snow.

Field note

Sinterklaas appears in the seasonal program alongside the American Santa parade.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: deBoer North, Pigeon Creek skiing and Seventy-Six dinner; add a ticketed holiday event in season. Sunday: Lemonjello's, a snowmelt walk, a short Holland State Park look and Boatwerks lunch.

One good day

Windmill breakfast → Holland Museum → skating at the Ice Park → Hops dinner → Kerstmarkt or Magic at the Mill when scheduled.

Buttermilk-style pancakes

For a home breakfast, fold buttermilk, eggs and melted butter into a simple flour-and-leavening batter without beating it smooth. Griddle small pancakes and add warm fruit; this is a home riff, not the bakery's formula.

A winter tall tale · as told in Holland

The town that heats its feet

Holland's snowmelt system grew from a downtown streetscape project in the late 1980s. Waste heat from power generation warms water circulated beneath streets and sidewalks. More than 190 miles of tubing now serve the system, which has expanded beyond Eighth Street. Here, a winter stroll can be an encounter with ambitious plumbing.
