Southeast Michigan — Livingston County · Town edition

Howell

A handsome old downtown that knows how to light up November and keep February occupied.

Why winter

Howell's Grand River Avenue is lined with historic buildings, restaurants, and inviting small businesses. The Fantasy of Lights parade is the big November celebration, while the Howell Opera House keeps winter moving with indoor artisan markets through March. Skiing, sledding, and winter hiking are available within the surrounding Livingston County recreation region.

A winter tall tale · as told in Howell

The Opera House That Refused to Retire

Howell's historic Opera House survives as a downtown cultural landmark. Rather than disappearing into an ordinary commercial building, it continues to host performances, arts programming, and markets. During the winter, its rooms fill with independent makers and visitors. Not every old theater gets an encore this long.

Tall tales grow in the telling. Take this one with road salt.
