A winter tall tale · as told in Iron Mountain

The mine that became a bat hotel

In 1992 a local caver, Steve Smith, lowered himself into the abandoned Millie Mine, which some residents believed had no bottom. About a hundred feet down he found one, along with an enormous colony of hibernating bats. His discovery kept the shaft from being filled in, and it remains a winter refuge for them. The miners moved out, the bats moved in, and management approved.
