Petoskey

A historic Victorian bluff city overlooking Little Traverse Bay, famous for fossilized Petoskey stones and grand resort heritage.

Why winter

Little hills. Long afternoons.

Set beside Little Traverse Bay, Petoskey makes a good meeting point for people who want different winters: nearby ski country, a local sports park, downtown shops and art, then a shared dinner.

Petoskey in winter is majestic. The historic Gaslight District's brick storefronts and gas lamps glow warmly against deep snowdrifts, while the shoreline of Little Traverse Bay produces fossilized coral Petoskey stones along frozen gravel ledges. It is a refined cultural hub with legendary hotels, great dining, and proximity to Nubs Nob and Boyne Highlands.

Overheard in Petoskey
Petoskey's Gaslight District retains its 1890s charm with authentic gas lamps that stay lit day and night all winter.

Winter’s people

The smallest hill won the weekend.

Alex had packed for a serious ski trip. His niece had packed a plastic sled and absolutely no interest in his schedule. By afternoon, he was the one dragging it uphill and negotiating for another turn.

Later, walking under the downtown lights, she asked which mountain they would do tomorrow. “The same one,” he said. “I need a rematch.”

Good to know

The Highlands and Nub’s Nob are Harbor Springs-area options; Boyne Mountain is in Boyne Falls. These are separate places, not downtown Petoskey slopes. Compare ticket dates and travel conditions before choosing a base.

Sled, skate, repeat

Petoskey Winter Sports Park: sledding, skating & hockey.

Good to know

Petoskey Winter Sports Park offers sledding, outdoor skating and a separate hockey rink. The regional tourism bureau lists local free sledding options, including the park; equipment and concessions are separate questions.

A downtown afternoon

Browse shops, have lunch, and stay for dinner.

Good to know

Downtown’s independent shops and places to eat make it a destination for the non-skiers, too. Choose a dinner stop before leaving the hill; winter opening hours vary.

Walk somewhere quiet

Offield Family Viewlands: trails & bay views near Harbor Springs.

Viewlands guide & trail map ↗
Good to know

Offield Family Viewlands near Harbor Springs has former golf-cart paths and bay views. Some elevations are steep. Winter footing, trail access and parking need checking; this is not a flat accessible-walk promise.

Lodging: no date-specific Petoskey quote has been verified. Compare the full stay total, occupancy, parking, taxes and cancellation terms; a blank price is not a free stay.

The warm-up / the day has an inside, too

Stay for the good part.

The best winter plans leave room to thaw out, talk longer and find something unexpected indoors.

Coffee / North Perk

Bring the conversation downtown. This Howard Street coffee stop makes a natural pause between shops and the next outdoor stretch.

Art / Crooked Tree Arts Center

Leave time for the galleries. Performances and workshops add another version of the day when the dated program fits your visit.

Dinner / City Park Grill

Make a proper dinner stop on East Lake Street. Check the current music calendar if you want your meal to become an evening.

A winter tall tale · as told in Petoskey

The hotel that keeps ghost files

The Terrace Inn opened in Bay View in 1911 and has been collecting ghost stories almost as long as it has been taking reservations. Guests and staff report footsteps, voices and a woman in white, and the inn keeps a folder of first-hand accounts at the front desk. Some hotels leave a chocolate on the pillow; this one leaves reading material.
