Shoppers on a snowy downtown street at night under warm lamps
Grand Traverse & Northwest Lower Peninsula · Town edition

Traverse City

The cherry capital sheds its summer flip-flops for Nordic skis, cellar-aged stouts, and surprisingly serious winter dining.

Overheard in Traverse City
The TART Trails grooming report is read every morning with the intensity of the Wall Street Journal.
Why winter

Summer in Traverse City requires the patience of a saint and a tolerance for bachelorette pedal-trolleys. Winter strips all that away, leaving a walkable bayfront town surrounded by world-class groomed Nordic trails in the Pere Marquette State Forest, a historic asylum turned culinary fortress, and bartenders who actually have time to tell you which snowy backroad leads to the best cider.

A random Saturday

Nothing planned. Here’s the plan.

A random Saturday · 01

The Asylum & Ale Loop

Start with an espresso at Higher Grounds inside Building 50 at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, snowshoe the steep cedar ridges behind the historic barns, then descend into the brick subterranean tunnels for lunch at Trattoria Stella.

Or try · 02

The TART to Farm Sprint

Rent a studded fat bike from Brick Wheels on E 8th Street, pedal four snowy miles northwest up the Leelanau Trail straight to Farm Club for a bowl of winter squash soup and a dark lager, then coast back into town for a nightcap at Low Bar.

Field note

No one complains about 'The Commons' being haunted; they just buy sourdough and Pinot Noir in the basement tunnels.

Michigan winter
One good day

Morning Nordic ski on the Vasa 10k loop, lunch burger at Slabtown, afternoon browse through Horizon Books on Front Street, and a four-course Italian supper at Trattoria Stella.

Make it a weekend

Check into Delamar on Friday for a steamed-pool swim. Spend Saturday skiing Hickory Hills and touring Old Mission Peninsula wineries before subterranean cocktails at Low Bar. Wrap up Sunday with a farm-trail trek to Farm Club and a roast coffee send-off at Mundos.

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons (800 Cottageview Dr, Traverse City, MI 49684)

  1. The original cast-iron ventilation grates set into the yellow-brick Victorian turrets.
  2. The lone 'Hippie Tree'—a massive gnarled willow buried in the woods behind the hospital painted with decades of neon layers.
  3. Icicles hanging six feet long off the deep eaves of the unrestored north cottages.
A winter tall tale · as told in Traverse City

The lady of Bowers Harbor

In the 1880s a Chicago lumber baron, J.W. Stickney, built a summer house on Old Mission Peninsula and later hired a nurse to look after his ailing wife, Genevive. When he died, the story goes, he left the fortune to the nurse, and Genevive did not outlive the news for long. The house is now the Bowers Harbor Inn, home to Mission Table and Jolly Pumpkin, and staff have been reporting flickering lights and taps that turn themselves on for decades. Genevive, by most accounts, still considers it her house.
