Ypsilanti

Depot Town suppers, industrial history and a water tower with a remarkably immodest trophy.

Why winter

Small museums and independent food stops make Ypsi an easy winter day. Rolling Hills adds real sledding and cross-country skiing when the snow cooperates, while holiday craft markets keep the handmade side of town busy.

Overheard in Ypsilanti
Ypsi is the everyday short form; Ypsilanti begins with an IP sound.
A random Saturday · 01

Two museums, entirely different sirens

Compare firefighting machinery at Michigan Firehouse Museum with the automotive displays at the Heritage Museum, then hold the design review over a Sidetrack burger.

The snow-to-coffee relay

Rent skis or a sledding tube at Rolling Hills when conditions allow, then trade sporting form for a seat at Hyperion and tell increasingly polished accounts of the outing.

Cap'n Crunch French toast

Home idea: dip thick bread in an egg-and-milk custard, press into crushed cereal and griddle gently in butter. Keep the heat moderate so the sweet coating browns as the middle cooks; this is a home variation.

A winter tall tale · as told in Ypsilanti

Municipal engineering wins a peculiar contest

Ypsilanti built its water tower in 1890 on the high ground at Summit Street. In 2003, Cabinet magazine's worldwide contest declared it the World's Most Phallic Building. The local Historical Society duly records the honor. Public infrastructure rarely receives quite this much unsolicited feedback.

Good to know: Live-checked October 26, 2026. Bellflower publishes email contact (hello@bellflowerypsi.com) and no public phone was verified; null is intentional. Cafe Liv operation/address are bureau-confirmed; its phone is a current secondary listing. Historical Museum Sunday hours conflict. The bureau publishes three Artisans dates; another local calendar adds November 28, so reconfirm any additional day. DIYpsi's old domain now presents unrelated content and no current event was confirmed; omitted. Rentals are snow-dependent. Water tower is an exterior photo stop, with no interior access promised.

Reviewed October 2026. Hours, prices and dates move; call ahead in January and February.
