West Michigan — Ottawa County · Town edition

Zeeland

Dutch-American roots, excellent bakeries, a parade full of lights, and a winter chili tradition that takes itself just seriously enough.

Why winter

Zeeland is a compact town where locally owned shops, bakeries, cafés, and a strong Dutch-American heritage shape downtown life. Late November and December bring the Magical Christmas Parade, Feel the Zeel festivities, a miniature railway display, and Sinterklaas traditions. Its independent shops and nearby county parks keep the town useful well beyond the holiday calendar.

A Small Dutch History Expedition

Visit Dekker Huis, follow the self-guided historic walking route, and finish with coffee and crêpes at La Crème. One afternoon, several centuries, very little actual walking.

The Parade-and-Taco Combination

On November 30, eat early at StrEATs Taco Kitchen, see the 6:15 PM tree lighting, and stay for the illuminated parade. A surprisingly efficient holiday evening.

Field note

The Dekker Huis Museum serves as both a history center and visitor welcome center.

The Town That Turns Plaid into a Chili Competition

Zeeland's Plaiderday Chili Crawl sends visitors from downtown business to business to sample different chili recipes. The event combines a tasting scorecard, local merchants, and bread from Zeeland Bakery. Participants vote on the chili they prefer, turning an ordinary winter afternoon into a community contest. Few small towns have found a better reason to wear plaid and argue about beans.
