Michigan Thumb — Huron County · Town edition

Bad Axe

The town with the magnificent name, a real axe in the library, good family cooking, and winter with absolutely no interest in being polite.

Overheard in Bad Axe
Bad Axe is the county seat of Huron County and the commercial center of Michigan's Thumb.
Why winter

Bad Axe is the commercial heart of Michigan's Thumb, where county-seat architecture, small restaurants, bakeries, and neighborhood bars remain active after the lakeshore resorts quiet down. Its indoor ice arena gives winter visitors a dependable recreation option, while the November holiday parade brings downtown to life. A short drive toward the Lake Huron shoreline adds forests, frozen-looking landscapes, and considerable weather.

A winter tall tale · as told in Bad Axe

The Town That Wouldn't Change Its Terrible Name

During a nineteenth-century survey, Captain Rudolph Papst reportedly found a rusty old axe at a campsite and marked the location Bad Axe Camp. The name stuck as a settlement grew around the crossroads. Some early residents wanted a more respectable name, but Papst returned to defend his original choice. Today an axe-head believed to be connected with the story remains on display at the local library. The branding department, apparently, never got a second vote.
