Winter in South Haven
Southwest Michigan · Town edition

South Haven

The summer harbor keeps a winter rink, a maritime museum and an annual excuse to fling a frozen fish.

Overheard in South Haven
Clementine's onion-ring towers make height a legitimate ordering unit.
Why winter

South Haven's downtown stays compact and useful in winter, with skating under the pavilion, warm cafés and year-round maritime exhibits. Ice Breaker brings the busy weekend back in February; quieter dates suit a comfortable inn and a short shore-side lighthouse view.

Or try · 02

Icebreakers without the ice bath

Spend Saturday in the Michigan Maritime Museum, then skate at the covered outdoor rink when open and finish with hot drinks at Café Julia. Several kinds of water, arranged in a useful order.

A random Saturday · 01

Order lunch by height

Order a six- or twelve-inch tower of onion rings at Clementine's, then compare your ambitious construction with the lighthouse's steelwork from the shore. One is easier to dismantle with lunch.

Field note

Blueberries remain a defining local crop and food identity, even outside the summer festival.

One good day

Phoenix Street on Broadway breakfast → maritime museum → skating if open → Taste dinner or Black River Tavern music.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: museum, Café Julia and a booked rink session if offered, then Clementine's or Taste. Sunday: Flying Saucer, a short Kal-Haven outing and Harbor Light with takeaway; use a dated Free First Sunday for museum access.

Homemade onion rings

For a home riff, dip thick onion slices in a light seasoned batter and fry until crisp, then salt immediately. Serve with ranch and stack modestly; the restaurant has purpose-built equipment for greater onion altitude.

South Haven South Pierhead Lighthouse, photographed from shore-side public ground

  1. The elevated catwalk's repeating metal supports, originally intended to keep the keeper above rough water.
  2. The tapering steel tower that replaced the earlier wooden light.
  3. The ring beneath the lantern, a reused component with a Muskegon past.
A winter tall tale · as told in South Haven

A lighthouse with secondhand jewellery

South Haven's present steel lighthouse was assembled in 1903. The Historical Association records that the cast-steel ring at its top came from Muskegon, where it had already served for forty years. The component had originally come from France. A familiar red landmark is therefore wearing an older, well-travelled piece of hardware.
