Winter in Kalamazoo
Southwest Michigan · Town edition

Kalamazoo

A college-and-brewery city with free museum time, serious cocktails and a pioneering mall that forgot the roof.

Overheard in Kalamazoo
Mall City comes from the nation's pioneering outdoor pedestrian shopping mall, opened in 1959.
Why winter

Kalamazoo supplies a strong indoor weekend: local-history and art museums, a well-established food scene and live music at Bell's. Nearby ski slopes, the Air Zoo and the Gilmore Car Museum let families choose their own ratio of cold air to engineering.

A random Saturday · 01

Refuel in the former filling station

Start at Water Street's original café and ask where the old oil-change pit sat, then walk the Kalamazoo Mall to consider a city center designed around people instead of pumps.

A random Saturday

No plans? Good. Try these.

Or try · 02

Two museums, two kinds of horsepower

Drive to the Air Zoo in Portage or the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, choose your preferred machine, then return to Studio Grill before its lunch service ends. Pick one regional museum if you want time to look rather than commute.

Michigan winter
Field note

Bell's Eccentric Café is central to the city's craft-beer history.

One good day

Water Street coffee → Valley Museum → Studio Grill lunch → KIA → Rustica dinner and a ticketed Bell's show if scheduled.

Make it a weekend

Saturday: choose Bittersweet skiing, the Air Zoo or Gilmore Car Museum, then Principle and Bell's downtown. Sunday: Crow's Nest, the Valley Museum after noon and an unhurried Mall walk; stay downtown at Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn or Kalamazoo House.

Bakery brownies

For a home batch, fold melted chocolate and butter into eggs, sugar and flour, then bake until the center is just set. Cool before cutting and serve with strong coffee; winter has already supplied the dark mood.

A winter tall tale · as told in Kalamazoo

The mall that began by removing traffic

In 1959 Kalamazoo closed part of Burdick Street to create the nation's first permanent outdoor pedestrian shopping mall. Victor Gruen's design was intended to help downtown compete with suburban shopping centers. Some of the route later reopened to slow vehicle traffic. The city acquired the nickname Mall City without first acquiring a roof.
